fleet foxes - grown ocean

Kiki Smith

Beautiful drawings by American feminist artist Kiki Smith. Her work often depicts themes of birth, death, childhood naivety, and unconventional fairy tales.

Viviane Sassen

I am in love with Viviane Sassen's photography. When I saw her work at last years Photo Biennial it was her images that I kept going back to. Awkward figures in stark light and shadow, and beautiful colours and patterns of Africa. Strangely simple and surreal.

John Stezaker

A couple of weeks ago I visited the John Stezaker exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery. Being a big fan of collage art, I was excited to see these for real. It was indeed a treat to see such striking images most of which are achieved with a simple cut, fold, or juxtaposition. Very refreshing to see amongst our photoshop-world. Sadly, the exhibition finished a few days ago, but do look into his work!

Craft by guys

GRAIN & GRAM: The New Gentlemans Journal
has some truly beautiful photography and page layout. The few craftsmen they have interviewed so far definitely fit a certain aesthetic but you can't deny what they are doing and making and producing has a high quality perfectionist touch.
My only itch is that its aimed at men, crafty gals like us at The Nest get just as much joy and satifaction from wood grain and welding!

turning

I just stumbled upon this short film by Karni and Saul, it's the most strange and beautiful thing I've seen in ages!

On his sixth birthday Robert receives a visit from three beautiful broken old birds in his mother's sitting room.
